About Us
Latham’s unique tug design allows maximum horsepower with shallow drafts and stable hulls, with lines and curves that denote a classic proud beauty. Within the bulkheads of each brightly painted vessel are everything a seaman could want: freshly maintained machinery with backup systems, a full outfit of rigging gear and safety equipment, satellite communications and navigational aids, private cabins with modern comforts, and a generous food supply. Each boat has a decorative, teak wood paneled homelike environment.
Smith Maritime’s vessels operate primarily between the U.S., Caribbean, Mexico, and Central & South America. When opportunity arises we also operate in Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, West Africa & the Pacific. Our history is one of dedicated service with a superior tow and safety record. During these 45+ years, we have towed vessels of every description all over the world. Through major storms, exotic foreign calls, and difficult salvage projects, we have made a thousand friends.
Our services include ocean and coastal towing, cable laying, submersible operations, cargo & dredge ops, demolition, harbor, anchor and buoy handling, oil-field work, and most exciting of all, salvage and rescue.
Captain Latham Smith, the mastermind of planning & engineering, travels the world frequently to assess various equipment and projects. In addition to his role as Captain, he manages assets in salvage operations. At any given time, we employ 40-60 people, including several of our crew who have been with us 20 or more years. As the company grows, we continue to add new personnel to our great tugboat & barge teams!
